Khajuraho Temples & Panna Wildlife Tour
An Enchanting Journey through Art, Architecture, and the Wild Heart of Madhya Pradesh
Where Stone Tells Stories and the Forest Breathes Wild ๐ฟ๐๏ธ

Some journeys donโt just offer scenic beauty or wildlife thrillsโthey carve a deep, lingering emotion into your soul. The Khajuraho Temples & Panna Wildlife Tour was one such experience for me. From the erotic elegance of temple carvings to the quiet intensity of tiger trails in Panna, this tour offered both aesthetic awe and primal adventure.
Set in the culturally rich Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, this journey unfolded like an epic taleโeach chapter more magical than the last.
Getting There ๐๐
By Air:
- Khajuraho Airport (HJR) is connected to Delhi, Varanasi, and other major cities.
By Train:
- Khajuraho Railway Station has limited connectivity; alternatively, reach Jhansi (180 km) or Satna (120 km) for better access.
By Road:
- From Jhansi or Satna, hire a cab or book with Sonakshi Travels for smooth transfers to Khajuraho.
Day 1: Arriving in Khajuraho โ Land of Temples & Time ๐ฝ๐๏ธ
The town of Khajuraho is surprisingly serene, with wide roads, flowering trees, and friendly locals.
Evening Visit: Light & Sound Show
Held at the Western Group of Temples, the show narrated the glorious past of Chandela kings, under soft lighting that made the temples look ethereal.
Local Cuisine to Try:
- Bhutte ki kees (grated corn delicacy)
- Poha with jalebi for breakfast
- Baigan bharta (smoky eggplant curry)
Dinner at a rooftop cafe gave me a view of the moonlit temples while sipping local masala chai.
Day 2: Exploring the Khajuraho Temples โ Elegance in Stone ๐งฉ๐๏ธ
Western Group of Temples (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
This is the largest and most ornate cluster.
- Kandariya Mahadev Temple: A towering marvel with over 800 erotic and spiritual sculptures.
- Lakshmana Temple: Dedicated to Vishnu, itโs a blend of sensuality and divinity.
- Devi Jagadambi Temple: Smaller but equally captivating.
๐ Tip: Hire a local guide who can share the mythological significance and symbolism in carvings.
Eastern & Southern Group
- Parsvanath Jain Temple: A symbol of tolerance and artistic excellence.
- Dulhadev Temple: Featuring river goddess sculptures and delicate detailing.
Cultural Note:
Contrary to modern assumptions, the erotic imagery signifies life, fertility, and cosmic balanceโnot obscenity.
Day 3: Panna National Park Safari โ Into the Wild ๐ ๐ฟ
Distance from Khajuraho: ~25 km | Travel Time: 40 minutes
Early morning, we drove into the rugged, forested beauty of Panna Tiger Reserve.
Safari Experience:
We spotted:
- Sloth Bear, barking deer, and nilgai
- Indian Vultures soaring overhead
- And the paw marks of a tiger (though elusive that day!)
The Ken River cuts through the park, creating dramatic gorges and waterfalls.
Ken Gharial Sanctuary
Just outside the park, this lesser-known spot offers boat rides to watch gharial crocodiles and river turtles.
Day 4: Raneh Falls & Village Immersion ๐ง๏ธ๐ค
Raneh Falls
This is a volcanic canyon carved by the Ken River. Multiple waterfalls tumble into deep ravines of pink, green, and black basalt rocks.
A local tribal musician played the flute by the cliffsโa spontaneous concert with nature.
Village Tour
We visited a nearby Bundelkhandi village, where women demonstrated traditional weaving and millet grinding.
Lunch was served on sal leaves: dal bafla, sattu roti, and jaggery.
Cultural Performances & Souvenirs ๐ผ๐
Khajuraho Dance Festival (Feb)
An annual classical dance event held at temple backdrops. Performances of Odissi, Bharatnatyam, and Kathak are mesmerizing.

Together, they reminded me that India isnโt just a country; itโs an experience layered in art, soul, and the wilderness.
