Ajanta – Ellora Cave Tour

Ajanta – Ellora Cave Tour (Aurangabad Circuit)

A Journey Through Time and Stone ⏳🚪

There are moments in life that etch themselves into memory, not through grand events but through the stillness of a cave, the echo of an ancient chant, or the chiselled smile of a stone Buddha. My Ajanta – Ellora Cave Tour was one such journey. Set in the heart of Maharashtra near Aurangabad, these rock-cut caves are not just architectural marvels, but living whispers of India’s spiritual and artistic soul. This was not just a trip—it was a time machine to centuries of devotion, silence, and stunning craftsmanship.

The moment I stepped off the train at Aurangabad, a sense of excitement surged through me. I was here to witness the finest Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu artistry, carved into stone cliffs centuries ago. But what I didn’t expect was how much the journey would transform me—connecting me deeply with history, mythology, and humanity.

The Start of the Circuit: Touchdown in Aurangabad ✈️🏠

Getting There 🚌🌄

Aurangabad is well-connected by air, rail, and road. I flew in from Mumbai (a 1-hour flight) and you can also opt for:

  • ✈️ Flights: Regular flights from Delhi, Hyderabad, and Pune.
  • 🚂 Trains: Aurangabad Railway Station connects to all major Indian cities.
  • 🚗 By Road: Smooth highways from Nashik, Shirdi, and Pune.

From the airport, my driver from Sonakshi Travels welcomed me with a warm smile, chilled water, and a plan for the day. We were off in a comfortable AC vehicle, setting the tone for a well-managed, immersive trip.

First Stop: The Divine Paintings of Ajanta Caves 🌍🌈

Distance: Aurangabad to Ajanta – 102 km (Approx. 2.5 to 3 hours drive)

Winding roads flanked by hills and village fields led us to the crescent-shaped gorge that hides the Ajanta Caves. Built between the 2nd century BCE and 6th century CE, these 30 Buddhist caves blew my mind.

What I Experienced 🎬

  • Cave 1 and Cave 2 were my favourites. The murals of Buddha’s life were so vivid, I felt they would spring to life any moment.
  • The calm of the monastic Chaityagrihas (prayer halls) was overwhelming.
  • Our guide shared tales of ancient monks, merchants, and the forgotten era until a British officer “discovered” the caves in 1819.

Local Touch 🍼🍛

After hours of art admiration, I enjoyed a simple local lunch: Pithla-Bhakri (gram flour curry with millet flatbread), spicy green chutney, and fresh buttermilk.

Second Stop: The Magnificence of Ellora Caves 🕊️🏭

Distance: Ajanta to Ellora – 110 km (Approx. 2.5 hours drive)

The next day, we drove towards Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a standing testament to religious harmony. These 34 caves, carved between the 6th and 10th centuries, include Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain temples.

What Took My Breath Away 😮

  • Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) — a complete mountain carved top-down into a temple. Mind-boggling!
  • Jain Caves — delicate and intricate with detailed ceilings.
  • Buddhist Cave 10 — with an enormous seated Buddha inside a massive stupa chamber.

It’s one thing to read about architecture. It’s another to stand inside a temple carved 1300 years ago and hear your breath echo.

Nearby Marvels: More than Just Caves 🏔️

Bibi Ka Maqbara — The “Mini Taj”

Only 5 km from Aurangabad city, this Mughal-era monument resembles the Taj Mahal and was built by Aurangzeb’s son in memory of his mother. An early morning visit here, with dew glistening on the marble, was deeply serene.

Daulatabad Fort 🏰

A short drive from Ellora, this fort’s engineering brilliance is awe-inspiring—from spiked gates to mazy escape routes. Don’t miss the climb for a panoramic view of the Deccan.

Panchakki — The Water Mill

This medieval marvel uses water energy to grind grain. Set beside a calm garden and Sufi dargah, it’s a peaceful detour.

Cultural Connections: Stories Beyond Stone 🌿🕯️

People, Festivals & Art

I was lucky to witness the Ellora-Aurangabad Festival held annually in March. With live performances of classical music, folk dances, and art exhibits, it felt like history come alive. The local markets around the venue sell handlooms, Paithani sarees, and Bidri metalwork—true treasures.

Cuisine You Must Try 🍽️

  • Naan Qalia: A spicy mutton curry served with naan—a legacy from the Tughlaq era.
  • Thalipeeth, Bhakarwadi, and Shengdana Chutney are must-try Maharashtrian dishes.
  • Don’t forget the Kala Jamun dessert.

Travel Tips 🚩

Best Time to Visit 🌤️❄️

  • October to March is ideal. Comfortable weather allows you to explore longer.
  • Avoid peak summer (April-June) as temperatures soar beyond 40°C.

What to Carry 🚒

  • Comfortable shoes – there’s lots of walking
  • Water bottles and sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
  • A flashlight to admire darker cave murals
  • Local cash for entry tickets and tips

Safety & Accommodation 🏨

Aurangabad is safe, tourist-friendly, and has a wide range of hotels from budget to luxury. I stayed at a boutique heritage hotel arranged by Sonakshi Travels, and their local expertise ensured smooth transfers and insightful guides.

Emotional Takeaway: A Whisper from the Past 🌻📷

There was a moment at Ajanta, while sitting alone in Cave 17, when I closed my eyes. The silence was not empty—it was full of stories. A monk painting under flickering oil lamps, a sculptor chiselling dreams into basalt, a pilgrim bowing in prayer. These caves aren’t ruins. They’re living chronicles.

Traveling through Ajanta and Ellora doesn’t just show you history—it transforms how you see time, devotion, and the sheer power of human creativity.
