Coorg – Chikmagalur – Sakleshpur Coffee Trail ☕🌿
Inhale the Aroma of the Western Ghats 🌄❤️
Some journeys begin with maps. Others begin with memories yet to be made. My Coorg – Chikmagalur – Sakleshpur Coffee Trail was one such unforgettable escape—an immersive voyage through rolling hills, misty estates, and the intoxicating scent of freshly roasted coffee beans.
As the sun peeked through the mist-drenched foliage of Karnataka’s Western Ghats, every sip of filter coffee felt more meaningful, every plantation walk a step closer to serenity. With Sonakshi Travels planning my trail to perfection, this wasn’t just a tour—it was an experience of culture, taste, warmth, and soul.
The Trail Begins: From Beans to Bliss 🚗🌿
The journey started from Bangalore, the gateway to all three destinations. The triangular route was carved with stunning vistas and quaint pitstops.
-
Bangalore to Coorg: 250 km (~6 hours)
-
Coorg to Chikmagalur: 140 km (~4.5 hours)
-
Chikmagalur to Sakleshpur: 60 km (~2 hours)
Each region on this trail offers something unique—Coorg’s Kodava traditions, Chikmagalur’s legendary coffee origins, and Sakleshpur’s hidden trails and emerald escapes.
Coorg: Scotland of India and Kingdom of the Kodavas 🏞️
Coorg, or Kodagu, was my first stop—a hill station wrapped in clouds and coffee. The breeze smelled of wet leaves and roasted beans, and time moved like molasses.
🌟 Must-Visit Places in Coorg:
🛕 Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe
This Tibetan monastery is as spiritual as it is photogenic—giant golden Buddhas, fluttering prayer flags, and serene chants create an atmosphere of peace.
💧 Abbey Falls
The waterfall roared through lush spice plantations. I took the suspension bridge walk that overlooks the cascading beauty—a moment worth photographing and remembering.
🌅 Raja’s Seat
Sunsets here are poetry. The garden complex on a hill gives you a view of the valley where the kings once sat to admire nature’s glory.
🏞️ Mandalpatti Viewpoint
Off-road jeeps take you here. Mornings are best when the fog swirls like cotton candy and the sun pierces through, turning the sky golden.
Kodava Culture & Hospitality 🥘🏡
I stayed at a traditional Kodava homestay near Madikeri. My host family was generous in both spirit and flavor. I was welcomed with kachampuli pork curry, akki rotti (rice flatbread), and the most aromatic Coorg-style filter coffee. They shared stories of Puthari (harvest festival), ancient weapons displayed in their hallway, and the martial traditions of their community.
🎭 Evenings were filled with laughter, music, and homemade wine made from wild berries.
Chikmagalur: Cradle of Indian Coffee ☕🌳
Leaving Coorg behind, I headed to Chikmagalur, known as the birthplace of coffee in India. Legend has it that Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in these hills.
The town unfolded like a storybook—with endless coffee estates, ancient temples, and cool breezes whispering through the pines.
🌟 Must-Experience Spots in Chikmagalur:
🌄 Mullayanagiri Peak
The highest peak in Karnataka at 6,330 ft, offering panoramic views, especially during sunrise. A short trek rewards you with windswept joy.
🕍 Hirekolale Lake
This manmade lake surrounded by mountains is perfect for peaceful reflection. It’s less crowded and ideal for quiet sunsets.
🛕 Sringeri Sharadamba Temple
A 1200-year-old temple with divine energy, intricate carvings, and rituals that carry the legacy of Adi Shankaracharya.
☕ Coffee Museum
An informative stop by the Coffee Board that walks you through bean-to-brew history.
Estate Walks and Coffee Tastings 🍂
At my estate stay, I joined a coffee plucking and roasting session. I learned how Arabica and Robusta beans are grown, sorted, sun-dried, and roasted. I even got to taste different brews—some smoky, others nutty—with hints of cardamom and vanilla.
🍰 Breakfast included “neer dosa with coconut chutney” and spicy “kesari bath.” Simple yet soul-satisfying.
Sakleshpur: Hidden Gem of the Western Ghats 🌲🚞
Sakleshpur, my final stop, was the quietest yet most lush. Often overshadowed by its neighbors, this hill town is a haven for trekkers, nature lovers, and solitude seekers.
🌟 Must-See Attractions in Sakleshpur:
🛤️ Green Route Trek (Railway Trek)
Walking along a disused railway line through tunnels, bridges, and dense forests was an adventure I’ll never forget. The train doesn’t run here anymore, making it a paradise for hikers.
🛕 Manjarabad Fort
A star-shaped fort built by Tipu Sultan. A short climb offers views of the Western Ghats and layers of mist curling through green folds.
💧 Magajahalli Waterfalls
Tucked away in the forest, this spot was blissfully uncrowded. I soaked my feet and soul in the icy flow.
Sakleshpur’s Simplicity and Warmth ☕🏞️
The coffee here felt wilder—grown in remote, less-manicured estates. I stayed in a charming hill cottage where birds sang me awake and the owners served ragi mudde with mutton curry, spicy avarekalu pulao, and freshly brewed coffee with palm sugar.
