Kaziranga National Park Jeep Safari

Kaziranga National Park Jeep Safari

🚗 Journey to the Wild Heart of Assam

It all began on a misty December morning, as the first rays of sunlight painted the skies of Guwahati in gentle shades of gold. I had read about Kaziranga National Park before—about the legendary one-horned rhinoceros and the swaying tall elephant grass—but nothing had prepared me for the emotional connection I would soon forge with this land.

Travelling solo, I booked my Kaziranga Jeep Safari through Sonakshi Travels, and from the very beginning, everything was seamlessly arranged. From my pick-up at Guwahati Railway Station to my resort stay near Kohora range, the journey unfolded like a well-told story.

🌿 Welcome to Kaziranga: The Land of the One-Horned Rhino

Nestled in the floodplains of the mighty Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sanctuary to over two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhinoceros population. Spread over 430 square kilometers, it boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna, including elephants, wild water buffaloes, swamp deer, sloth bears, leopards, and over 500 species of birds.

🌎 Location & Accessibility

  • Guwahati to Kaziranga: Approx. 220 km (takes around 5-6 hours by road)
  • Jorhat to Kaziranga: Approx. 100 km (2.5 hours by road)
  • Nearest Airport: Jorhat Airport (also connected via Guwahati)
  • Nearest Railway Station: Furkating (75 km away)

Pro Tip: Always plan your arrival at least a day before your scheduled safari.

🚜 The Safari Experience: Roaring Engines & Whispering Wilderness

📸 First Glimpse of the Jungle

The air was heavy with anticipation as our open jeep rumbled into the Kohora Range. The guide spoke in hushed tones, his eyes scanning the thick jungle. Suddenly, he signaled us to stop. There it was—the majestic one-horned rhinoceros, calmly grazing amid the tall elephant grass.

Every moment felt sacred. Spotted deer darted past us, a crested serpent eagle flew overhead, and a family of elephants emerged gracefully from a grove of trees.

  • Evening Safari: 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

🎩 Cultural Touches: Hospitality of Assam

🍽️ Local Flavours That Touched My Soul

One of the highlights of my Kaziranga experience was the Assamese thali at a local village hut. Served on a bell metal plate, it included:

  • Joha rice
  • Masor Tenga (sour fish curry)
  • Khar
  • Labra (mixed vegetable curry)
  • Pigeon meat curry (on request)
  • Local jaggery-sweetened pitha

Sitting cross-legged, eating with my hands, and listening to folk tunes in the background, I felt deeply rooted.

🎼 Bihu & Bamboo Dances

In the evening, the resort organized a folk performance featuring Bihu and bamboo dances by local children and women in traditional mekhela chadors. The rhythm of the dhol, pepa, and taal echoed through the air, blending seamlessly with the forest’s night sounds.
