Spiti Valley Road Trip (Offbeat)

Where Roads Are Raw and the Soul Finds Solitude

🌄  Into the Heart of Himalayan Silence

Some journeys don’t just take you to a destination — they take you into yourself. The Spiti Valley Road Trip (Offbeat) is one such unforgettable voyage through moon-like landscapes, ancient monasteries, and villages where time stands still.

Tucked between Tibet and Himachal Pradesh, Spiti — meaning “The Middle Land” — is India’s answer to the wild, spiritual, and raw beauty of Ladakh, only quieter, colder, and more intimate. It’s not just offbeat — it’s out of this world.

My journey through this high-altitude desert with Sonakshi Travels wasn’t merely a road trip. It was a pilgrimage of solitude, thrill, and warmth in a cold land. Every curve brought a story, every stop a perspective, and every silence a breath I didn’t know I needed.

🧭 Planning the Offbeat Spiti Valley Road Trip

🗺️ Route Overview

Spiti can be reached via two routes:

  • Shimla Route (All Year, Easier):

🛣️ Ideal for a gradual ascent, safer during early/late season travel.

  • Manali Route (June to Oct, Steep):
Manali → Rohtang Pass → Kunzum Pass → Kaza
🚘 More adventurous, but only open in summers.

🚗 Distance & Duration:

  • Delhi to Kaza (via Shimla): ~760 km | 3–4 days

  • Total Trip Duration: 8–10 days minimum for full experience

  • Recommended Vehicle: 4×4 SUV or Tempo Traveller
(Sonakshi Travels provides well-maintained vehicles with experienced local drivers)

🏞️ Day-by-Day Itinerary Snapshot

🏙️ Day 1–2: Delhi to Kalpa via Shimla & Sarahan

We began our journey from Delhi in a private SUV. By the time we crossed Shimla and reached Sarahan, the air had changed — cooler, thinner, quieter.

📍Kalpa (2,960 m):

  • Known for the Kinner Kailash Viewpoint 🏔️

  • Crisp apple orchards 🍎

  • Quaint wooden houses with snowy peaks in the backdrop

🛏️ Stay: A Himachali homestay overlooking the Sutlej River.

🥘 Tried: Chana Madra, local trout, and Himachali Dham served on leaf plates.

🏞️ Day 3: Kalpa to Nako – The Gateway to Spiti

The road narrowed, landscapes turned barren, and by the time we reached Nako, it felt like we’d crossed into another planet.

📍Nako Village:

  • Nako Lake surrounded by willows 🌳

  • Monastery dating back to 11th century

  • Local children offering prayer stones and smiles

🧘‍♂️ Pro Tip: Acclimatize here. It’s high altitude (3,600 m) and the body needs time.

🕉️ Day 4: Nako to Tabo – Where Silence Lives

Driving along the Spiti River, we reached Tabo — home to India’s oldest Buddhist monastery still functioning, over 1,000 years old.

📍Tabo Monastery:

  • Ancient murals, clay walls, and Buddha statues

  • UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List

📚 We attended a Buddhist prayer session at dawn — gentle chants, incense in the air, and a peace I’ve never felt before.

🏯 Day 5: Tabo to Kaza – The Heart of Spiti

We finally reached Kaza, the unofficial capital of Spiti. It’s the biggest town in the valley but still holds its small-village charm.

💡 Explore Around Kaza:

📍Key Monastery 🛕

  • Most iconic Spiti image — perched on a cliff, overlooking the valley

  • 800 years old, home to 300 monks

📍Hikkim 📨

  • World’s highest post office (4,440 m)

  • I sent a postcard to myself — it reached in 26 days. Worth the wait.

📍Komic & Langza:

  • Komic: World’s highest village with a motorable road

  • Langza: Famous Buddha statue, fossil hunting, and warm locals

🛏️ Stay: Boutique eco-hotel arranged by Sonakshi Travels with solar-heated rooms and stargazing from the terrace.

🍲 Dined on: Thukpa, Yak cheese sandwiches, and Tibetan momo platters

💧 Day 6–7: Kaza to Chandratal Lake – The Crescent of Heaven

Driving toward Chandratal was like stepping into a dreamscape. The terrain was rugged, wild, and awe-inspiring.

📍Chandratal Lake:

  • 4,300 m above sea level

  • Sky-mirroring lake surrounded by rock-strewn hills

  • Camping site nearby with zero light pollution — stars felt touchable ✨

🔥 We spent the night around a bonfire, sipping hot soup under a sky that made us feel infinitely small and spiritually full.

🚘 Day 8–9: Exit via Kunzum Pass to Manali

We crossed the spectacular Kunzum La (4,590 m), where every traveler stops to pray for a safe passage. Descending into greener valleys, we reached Manali — the return to hustle after Himalayan stillness.

🛏️ One night in Manali to rest and reflect before heading home.

🛕 Culture & Traditions: A Living Tibet in India

Spiti is not a tourist destination — it’s a living culture of Tibetan Buddhism, resilience, and spiritual simplicity.

🎭 Local Experiences:

  • Attend Cham masked dance if visiting during monastery festivals

  • Try a home-cooked meal with a local family in Langza or Tabo

  • Participate in morning prayers at a monastery

🧘 In Spiti, you don’t watch culture — you live it.

The Spiti Valley Road Trip (Offbeat) didn’t offer luxury. It offered stillness. It didn’t provide comfort in excess — it gave me something far rarer: clarity. In the shadows of towering cliffs, in the morning chants of monks, and in the warmth of a stranger’s smile in a frozen village, I found parts of myself I didn’t know were missing.

And the best part? I never felt lost — thanks to Sonakshi Travels, who curated the perfect blend of adventure and ease, thrill and rest, rough edges and soft landings.
