✨ Chota Mangwa – Hamlet Above the Teesta River
Tucked away in the lesser-known folds of the Eastern Himalayas, Chota Mangwa is a tiny, serene hamlet above the Teesta River, where time seems to pause and the only things that move are clouds and prayer flags in the cool mountain breeze. Perched on a ridge facing the majestic Kanchenjunga range, this village is a soulful escape — not just from the noise of the city, but also from the noise within.
This is a heartfelt tale of my journey into Chota Mangwa, an offbeat paradise where the mountains whisper stories, the river hums lullabies, and the villagers greet you like long-lost kin.
📍 The Journey Begins: Reaching the Ridge
Our trip to Chota Mangwa started from Darjeeling, a drive of approximately 35 km, winding downhill through lush tea gardens, quiet pine forests, and village tracks. It took around 2 hours by car, but every bend was a postcard.
The last stretch, from Takdah to Chota Mangwa (around 8 km), was the most enchanting — misty, narrow, and lined with wildflowers. As we ascended, the Teesta River glistened below, snaking through the valley like a ribbon of silver.
🏡 Discovering Chota Mangwa: Where Simplicity Smiles
Chota Mangwa is not a place of grand monuments or buzzing markets. It is a community of simple homes, terraced farms, and hearts that beat with kindness. There are just a handful of families living here, primarily Lepchas and Gorkhas, known for their warm hospitality and deep respect for nature.
We stayed in a lovely eco-homestay managed by a local family. The rooms were wooden, the bed linen was hand-washed in the spring, and the view from the window? A canvas of clouds, hills, and the mighty Teesta.
🌿 Things to Do in Chota Mangwa
💚 1. Teesta Viewpoint Walks
Just a few steps from our stay, we followed a local trail that led us to a cliff-edge viewpoint. From here, we could see the confluence of the Teesta and Rangeet rivers, with the entire Kalimpong valley stretching beyond. Sunrise and sunset here are mystical — a quiet performance by nature.
🌾 2. Orange Orchards & Organic Farms
The village is known for its orange cultivation. Winter is the season of golden fruits hanging from every branch. Many families also grow ginger, squash, and cardamom. We visited one such farm and helped the family sort oranges — an experience far more grounding than any luxury tour.
📍 3. Visit to Tinchuley and Takdah
- Tinchuley Viewpoint: Just 5 km away, famous for Kanchenjunga views
- Takdah Orchid Center: Around 6 km, a peaceful haven of Himalayan blooms
You can plan a half-day excursion to these spots, preferably with a local guide arranged by Sonakshi Travels.
🍽️ 4. Taste Local Delicacies
Every meal at the homestay was a celebration of the land —
- Aloo Phing (potato with glass noodles)
- Niguru (wild fiddlehead ferns)
- Chhurpi soup
- Fresh farm-to-plate vegetables cooked over firewood
Even the salt here smelled of the forest.

🎉 Festivals and Traditions
During Maghe Sankranti, the village celebrates with traditional food, music, and sports. We were lucky to witness local boys perform Damphu dance, a traditional Lepcha folk form. The women made Sel Roti and bamboo shoot curry.
There was no stage, no loudspeaker. Just a gathering under an old tree, a community sharing joy.
❤️ Emotional Takeaway: The Village That Teaches Stillness
Chota Mangwa taught me the art of slowing down. There’s something healing about listening to the wind, watching clouds drift across Kanchenjunga, and tasting food that was grown with love.
I remember an old lady who gave us hand-knit wool socks before we left. She said, “The mountain keeps you warm when your heart is open.”
I left with tears in my eyes and peace in my soul.
